Symposium Acta Materialia Symposium
Presentation Title Acta Materialia Mary Fortune Award Lecture: Making the Accomplishments of Notable Materials Scientists and Engineers More Discoverable to the World
Author(s) Natasha Vermaak
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Natasha Vermaak
Abstract Scope In this talk, I will present an often overlooked tool for increasing awareness of the importance of materials science and the people behind break-through research, past and present. Specifically, I will provide examples of creating and updating content on Wikipedia. In the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models (LLMs), Wikipedia (with versions in over 300 languages) offers a large open body of information on the internet. Many major LLMs like OpenAI's GPT series, Google's Gemini, and Meta's LLaMA, have used Wikipedia as a core text corpus for training. Thus I will aim to encourage and empower attendees to become Wikipedians.
Proceedings Inclusion? Undecided
