| Abstract Scope |
Rare-earth permanent magnets, especially those with high coercivity, are essential for high-temperature applications such as electric vehicles, wind turbines, and industrial motors. While heavy rare-earth-containing NdFeB and SmCo magnets are widely used, sintered SmFeN magnets could be a more resource-efficient alternative. However, sintering of SmFeN has been challenging due to its phase decomposition into α-Fe and SmN phases at high temperature (e.g., 600°C), resulting in significant coercivity loss. Herein, metal-activated sintering is explored for SmFeN magnet compaction at a lower temperature (i.e., 420°C). The consolidated magnet exhibited good magnetic properties (e.g., BHmax of 24 MGOe and Hci of 12.2 kOe). Techno-economic analysis indicated a production cost as low as $48/kg for the sintered magnet produced by hot pressing. Life cycle assessment demonstrated >68% reduction in global warming impact compared to NdFeB and SmCo magnets, primarily due to using lower-impact raw materials. |
