| Abstract Scope |
Primarily developed around ductile materials, kinetic particle deposition (KPD) has also been demonstrated to produce dense ceramic films in solid-state with tremendous potential to fabricate functional coatings for applications in energy, defense, aerospace and healthcare. However, the underlying particle adhesion mechanisms and the influence of the processing conditions on the initiation and the growth of ceramic films are not well-understood, hindering the advancement of the technology for direct industrial applications. In this study, a novel high-pressure vacuum cold spray (HP-VCS) process and computational fluid dynamics were used jointly to controllably vary the impact velocity and temperature of nano-to-micro scale yttria-stabilized zirconia particles to study processing conditions that lead to film formation and buildup. The powder and the film characteristics were further analyzed to investigate potential adhesion mechanisms. Through this work, a new computational-experimental framework is also presented for assessing and predicting ceramic particle deposition using KPD. |
