Additively manufactured metals exhibit complex interactions among defects, microstructural heterogeneity, and local deformation behavior, making the validation of predictive mechanical models particularly challenging. This presentation introduces an experimental framework combining high-resolution digital image correlation, electron backscatter diffraction, and electron microscopy to quantify deformation localization near processing-induced defects and microstructural features. By directly measuring the spatial evolution of plastic localization, this approach can isolate and quantify the relative contributions of defects and microstructure. Applied to additively manufactured 316L, the approach reveals that deformation localization is governed by the combined effects of defect characteristics and local microstructural neighborhoods. We develop a methodology to quantify and visualize these coupled influences, providing new insight into the mechanisms that control deformation localization. The resulting framework provides physically meaningful validation metrics and offers a pathway for calibrating and validating next-generation fatigue and crystal plasticity models for additively manufactured structural materials. |
