Abstract Scope |
The present work compared the semi-static and the dynamic toughnesses of epoxy matrix composites reinforced with up to 30 vol.% kenaf fiber (30KF). The semi-static toughness associated with the area under the tensile curve of 30KF specimens displayed a value about 12 times that of the neat epoxy matrix. While the dynamic toughness obtained in impact tests of 30KF specimens was 22 times that of the neat epoxy. The average semi-static tensile toughnesses of all composites were found superior to the corresponding dynamic impact toughnesses. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the fracture mechanisms for each case and evidences the specific influence of the kenaf fiber in the two different toughness conditions investigate. |
