| Abstract Scope |
Worn turbine components often require costly replacements with long lead times. Pulsed laser beam welding (PLBW) provides a low-heat-input repair approach that can minimize distortion while reducing repair time and cost relative to conventional methods. A computational and experimental approach was used to optimize PLBW parameters for repairing a 422 stainless steel turbine shaft using 410 stainless steel filler metal. The processing conditions were tailored to achieve the desired microstructure and properties without requiring post-weld heat treatment. |
