| Abstract Scope |
Magnesium alloys are attractive for biomedical and energetic applications because of their low density, electrochemical activity, and strong thermodynamic driving force for oxidation. This presentation will discuss magnesium alloy design across two application spaces: biodegradable Mg alloys and ultrasonically atomized Mg-based reactive metal powders. The first part will focus on Mg-Ca-Sc alloys developed as potential biodegradable load-bearing implant materials, where alloying and thermomechanical processing were used to control phase formation, micro-galvanic coupling, hydrogen evolution, recrystallization, texture evolution, and deformation behavior. The second part will focus on Mg-Al-based reactive metal powders designed to tune ignition and combustion behavior. In these powders, aluminum provides a high enthalpy of oxidation, while magnesium offers a pathway to reduce the ignition threshold. Powders spanning compositions from pure Mg through Mg-Al alloys to pure Al were synthesized by ultrasonic atomization to study the role of alloy chemistry and microstructure. |
