| Abstract Scope |
Direct mechanical exfoliation of MAX phases within a silicone polymer matrix was achieved using a three-roll mill, providing a potentially greener alternative to conventional chemical etching routes for MXene production. Exfoliation was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which revealed the delamination of MAX phase particles following processing. Rheological characterization using a parallel-plate rheometer showed a significant change in viscoelastic behavior after exfoliation. While the unprocessed MAX phase-silicone mixture exhibited loss modulus-dominated behavior, the exfoliated nanocomposite demonstrated a substantial increase in storage modulus and pronounced shear-thinning characteristics. The enhanced rheological response was subsequently leveraged to formulate a printable MXene-silicone nanocomposite ink for direct ink writing. These results demonstrate that mechanical exfoliation not only offers a sustainable pathway for generating MXene-containing composites but also enables tunable rheological properties suitable for additive manufacturing and other advanced functional applications. |
