| Abstract Scope |
Redox control in molten chloride salts is central to managing corrosion of structural alloys in molten salt reactor coolants, yet how salt halobasicity governs the stability of engineered redox buffers, and in turn alloy corrosion, remains poorly quantified. Using an in-situ XAS/XRF platform at NSLS-II BMM coupled with atomistic modeling, we tracked Eu(III)/Eu(II) speciation and simultaneous Cr Kα release during Ni-20Cr corrosion in LiCl-KCl and MgCl₂-KCl doped with EuCl₃ at 525 °C. Eu(III) is the oxidizing species driving Cr dissolution: in LiCl-KCl the Eu inventory remains Eu(III), while increasing MgCl₂ content converts Eu(III) to Eu(II), depleting the oxidant reservoir. Additional measurements extend the platform to Yb and Sm buffers across MgCl₂-KCl compositions pairing time-resolved XAS/XRF with ex-situ corrosion morphology, UV-Vis optical basicity, and salt redox potential measurements, to test whether Ln(III)/Ln(II) destabilization, driven by chlorobasicity, control corrosion kinetics. |
