| Abstract Scope |
In non-ferrous industries, pyrometallurgical processes produce high-temperature off-gases that are typically hot, dusty, and laden with hazardous contaminants. These contaminants must be cooled and cleaned to ensure an environmentally clean process.
Off-gases from primary or traditional smelting and converting processes and modern recycling facilities vary significantly in the type and quantity of contaminants. Primary smelters typically generate off-gases with high levels of particulate matter, SO2, heavy metals and mercury loads, whereas recycling processes contain lower SO2 content but very high concentrations of halides such as hydrofluoric acid, hydrochloric acid, hydrobromic acid and bromine.
This paper presents GEA’s latest innovations and various solutions for treating off-gases. In addition to the standard gas-cleaning train for primary copper smelters- comprising hot electrostatic precipitators, scrubbers, and packed cooling towers followed by wet electrostatic precipitators and often mercury removal technologies – the paper also explores equipment for halide removal, advanced material concepts, and energy-saving technologies. |
