The Inconel 718 proton beam window of the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory was demonstrated to have an increase in ductility with the increase in irradiation dose through tensile testing. This improvement in ductility is unexpected since beam irradiation generally increases strength but decreases ductility. Therefore, in-depth characterization of the material is necessary to understand its underlying properties. In this work, we investigate the dynamics of He and H gas in nanocavities of Inconel 718 using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) equipped with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) before and after solution annealing from 500 to 900 °C with a 30 min hold at each temperature. Furthermore, non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) is performed on the EELS datasets to analyze spatial features. Results show uniquely varied distributions of He and He gases in the nanocavities as well as cavity size distributions at each temperature range. |
