| Abstract Scope |
As graphene and other two-dimensional (2D) materials transition from laboratory research to industrial applications, scalable production of high-quality materials has become a critical challenge. We present a laser assisted synthesis platform for the rapid, energy efficient production of graphene and related materials. Using only 2 W s of energy, the process expands graphite to 800 mL g⁻¹, producing few-layer graphene with high structural quality (ID/IG ≈ 0.13, I2D/IG ≈ 0.52). The versatility of the approach is further demonstrated through the laser synthesis of layered transition metal oxide crystals, highlighting its potential as a scalable manufacturing platform for advanced functional materials. Ultralight graphene aerogels were fabricated, which were for photonic propulsion at 1g and 0g onboard a parabolic flight both under vacuum. Propulsion results obtained indicated orders of magnitude improvement under 0g. |
