Oxide Dispersion Strengthened (ODS) metallic alloys traditionally prepared via mechanical alloying techniques can result in contamination and significant changes to powder particle morphology. Powder metallurgy and Additive Manufacturing (AM) techniques require powder feedstocks with good flowability and homogenous distributions of oxides. Resonant Acoustic Mixing (RAM) employs acoustic waves to homogenize materials without degrading powder morphology. Previous studies have shown that RAM can be used to decorate thin layers of oxide nanoparticles around gas atomized powder particles. However, the characteristics of powder prepared via RAM is not well understood and there have been no extensive studies performed for ODS alloys. Here four common pre-alloyed powders used for AM (316L, Ti6Al4V, Inconel-718, and AlSi10Mg) and two multi-principal element alloy powder blends (FeCoCrMnNi and NiCoCrMo) with yttria nanoparticles are prepared via RAM to form six ODS alloys. The resulting particle morphology, flowability and oxide distribution are assessed for each alloy. |
