| Abstract Scope |
FCC alloy chemical compositions were identified that exhibit unusual plastic localization behavior, characterized by drastic homogenization of plasticity within the alloy microstructure, during deformation. To understand this process, single-crystal and polycrystalline CrCoNi specimens were subjected to monotonic loading at room temperature to identify the mechanisms that lead to such plastic homogenization. Scanning tunneling microscopy and high-resolution digital image correlation were used to evaluate the dynamics of the associated deformation processes and their dependence on crystallographic orientations. An unusual competitive deformation process between slip and nanotwinning is observed. Such a mechanism is noted to have unprecedented beneficial effects on the fatigue properties of the alloy, opening up a new design space for fatigue-resistant alloys. |
