Abstract Scope |
This work will describe our efforts on novel materials and interfaces leading to high performance solid oxide electrolysis cells to achieve DOE's hydrogen targets for high temperature electrolysis systems with a focus on the oxygen electrode. Our unique high temperature cell is based on a baseline design comprising oxygen interstitial and p-type conducting layered Ruddlesden-Popper oxides on a fuel electrode-supported cell. I-V performance curves of single electrolysis cells were measured under varying temperature, fuel composition, and oxidant compositions. The resulting curves were fitted with a cell model incorporating ohmic, activation, and concentration polarization. The resulting estimates of the polarization component reveal the dominant polarization losses and suggest strategies to improve the performance of the cell and improve cell degradation rates. |
