Multiferroic materials, in which ferroelectric, ferromagnetic, and ferroelastic orders coexist and are coupled, exhibit rich microstructures comprising domains separated by phase interfaces and their junctions. While the thermodynamic driving traction governing phase interface motion in thermoelastic and multiferroic continua is well established, no analogous expression exists for the junctions at which multiple phases simultaneously meet. We derive, from thermodynamic considerations, the driving force acting on such multi-phase junctions in a multiferroic continuum undergoing finite deformation and coupled electro-magneto-mechanical loading. Starting from the localized Clausius-Duhem inequality and the fundamental conservation laws, we derive a new expression for the junction driving force, which plays a role analogous to the J-integral in nonlinear fracture mechanics. We further specialize both expressions to the quasi-static, infinitesimal-deformation limit for ferroelectric domain evolution. The junction driving force provides a rigorous kinetic closure for sharp-interface models of multiferroic microstructure evolution. |
