| Abstract Scope |
High-temperature (HT) conditions often result in severe surface damage and deformation that degrade performance and eventually cause system failure. Utilization of Laser Shock Peening (LSP) to increase surface strenght applications is well-established at room temperature, yet its effectiveness at HTs has been questionable to the manufacturing community as exposure to HT relaxes the beneficial residual stresses and diminishes laser peen induced refined microstructures. This presentation discusses the HT tribology and contact creep behavior of Inconel 617 and Inconel 718 at temperatures up to 900 °C and subjected to the LSP process. Regular LSP and a new thermally-engineered LSP process, are utilized to enhance the microstructural, contact creep, and tribological properties. The results show that the new technique leads to residual stress, microstructure and hardness stability, enhanced tribo-film behavior, and decreased contact creep, even after long exposure to HT conditions. The key mechanisms behind the observed enhancements are also discussed. |
