| Abstract Scope |
The Idaho National Laboratory Nuclear Materials Performance Division’s mission is to enhance the understanding of nuclear material performance under extreme nuclear environments to accelerate the development, qualification and demonstration of advanced nuclear energy systems as well as extend the life of existing nuclear power plants. The division performs structural materials evaluation, advanced material characterization, thermophysical properties measurements, and non-destructive x-ray characterization techniques measurements of nuclear materials in several laboratories, including the Structural Properties Laboratory (SPL). The SPL is INL’s newest hot cell facility. Its purpose is to support characterization of highly radioactive structural materials associated with fission and fusion. SPL utilizes both hot cells and shielded enclosures to characterize highly radioactive samples. The hot cells and shielded enclosures’ function and equipment will be described. The facility is also furnished with a research glovebox and eight chemical hoods that support research activities on lower dose specimens. |
