| Abstract Scope |
We have found Laves phase ductile and highly deformable in a CoCrFeNi2.1(HfNbTa)0.2 alloy. The alloy including 8 vol% of Laves phase having an approximate chemical composition of Co14.4Cr5.6Fe8.2Ni56.4Nb2.3Ta1.4Hf11.7 could be cold-rolled by 90% reduction in thickness, where the Laves phase was highly elongated to the rolling direction without fracture. Different from well-known brittle Laves phase having hexagonal C14 crystal structure, the ductile Laves phase had cubic C15 structure with the site occupancy preferences of the constituent elements. The unusual deformability of the Laves phase was attributed to the spectacular propensity for nano-twin formation on the {111}<112> system, presumably resulting from its increased compositional complexity. |
