| Abstract Scope |
Synchrotron-based in situ X-ray tomography during simultaneous compression provides a 3D view into materials of their deformation and fracture. Progressive internal deformation can be tracked using DVC for both elastic and plastic deformation. While many new insights into the internal mechanics of polycrystalline deformation have emerged, most studies have focused on plastic deformation in the form of microcrack development in polycrystals with less of a focus on the preceding strain distribution. This simultaneous uniaxial compression with 3D tomography allows us to create 3D movies and maps of the deformation (track morphological changes), fracture, and failure of polycrystals to granular materials including Fontainebleau Sandstone and sugars. The predominant feature of a self-organized strain distribution involves linear features of high strains, like the concept of force chains expressed through stress in granular materials. We show that a self-organized distribution appears early in deformation and elongated strain patterning parallel to the load direction. |
