Abstract Scope |
Epoxy coatings pigmented with niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) demonstrate potential for protecting against corrosion on poorly prepared steel surfaces. This study analyzed the performance of epoxy coatings with Nb2O5 applied to carbon steel (ASTM A36) specimens exposed to the aggressive environment of a continuous casting process in a steel plant located in the state of Espírito Santo (Brazil). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, pull-off adhesion tests, and microscopic analyses were used to evaluate the protection of the coatings. The objective was to understand the corrosion mechanisms and the interaction between the coating and the corroded substrate. Results indicate that Nb2O5-pigmented coatings exhibit superior corrosion resistance compared to conventional epoxy coatings. This research offers valuable information for the development of high-performance and environmentally sustainable coatings for steel protection. |
