Natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites have emerged as promising materials for acoustic applications due to their properties, renewability, and potential to replace conventional sound absorbers. This study evaluates the sound absorption behavior of epoxy composites reinforced with piassava fibers through experimental characterization and comparison with theoretical models. Composite specimens with different thicknesses were tested using an impedance tube to determine the normal incidence sound absorption coefficient (SAC). The experimental results were compared with predictions obtained from the Delany–Bazley and Johnson–Champoux–Allard models. In general, the SAC increased with frequency and was influenced by specimen thickness and internal structure. Thicker samples exhibited improved performance, particularly at low and medium frequencies, while the presence of an air cavity behind the specimen enhanced acoustic absorption over specific frequency ranges. The results indicate that epoxy/piassava composites exhibit promising acoustic performance, demonstrating the potential of natural fiber composites as sustainable materials for passive noise control applications. |
