Diffusion of Co in pure copper Σ 5(310)[001] bicrystals is investigated using the radiotracer technique and applying the 57Co radioisotope. Anomalous penetration profiles, which deviate strongly from the exact solutions for a position-independent grain boundary diffusion rate, are related to the Co segregation-induced changes of the grain boundary structure. High-resolution electron microscopy measurements were performed on (natural) Co-diffused samples mimicking the radiotracer experiments with 57Co. Characteristic changes of grain boundary atomistic motives and an appearance of specific grain boundary phases (complexions) demarcated by linear-type grain boundary defects were documented. The GB linear-type defects are considered to be responsible for the transient enhancement of the Co grain boundary diffusion rates and the appearance of the abnormal penetration profiles. Nano-beam diffraction is used to record the Co diffusion-induced evolution of elastic strains in the grain boundary vicinity with a nanometer resolution. |
