Abstract Scope Flash sintering, in which a green body is heated by passing an electric current through it, allows sintering to be achieved in a matter of seconds. However, uniform densification is difficult to achieve because the temperature is higher in the centre of the piece being sintered. This originates in the loss of heat from the surface of the sample but is exacerbated by the negative temperature coefficient of resistivity (NTC) behaviour of most ceramics, which concentrates the current in the sample core. In this work, we design a green body in which powders of YSZ and Ta2O5 react to form a solid solution with higher resistivity when heated to the sintering temperature. This directs the current to unsintered regions, giving more uniform heating and densification. Compositions that lead to transformable tetragonal zirconia solid solutions are established and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the optimised composition are reported.
