A duplex oxide layer with complex microstructure typically forms on the surface of stainless steels. Raman spectroscopy offers a non-destructive route to stress quantification in such oxides via the stress-induced shift of characteristic vibrational modes. Existing calibrations for chromium oxide rely upon hydrostatic compression of pure synthetic Cr₂O₃ at pressures of tens of GPa. These calibrations implicitly assume direct transferability to passive films under service or residual stress conditions. The passive film differs from bulk synthetic oxide in composition, crystallinity, thickness, and constraint. Service stresses in the substrate reach only hundreds of MPa before plastic deformation, far removed from the GPa regime of hydrostatic calibration. This work investigates the relationship between bulk substrate stress and passive film stress via in-situ uniaxial loading. The method permits this relationship to be established under conditions representative of service, rather than inferred from surrogate materials under non-representative stress states. |
