| Abstract Scope |
Iron and nickel alloy systems are commonly joined using dissimilar metal welding techniques. These systems undergo non-epitaxial nucleation where the grains in the weld metal do not share the same orientation as the base metal. It is necessary to analyze this behavior to assist in failure prevention as well as microstructural engineering. This study investigated the role of crystal structure and solidification rate on the nucleation behavior of dissimilar metal welds between iron-nickel electron beam welds and 439 stainless steel-nickel laser welds. The electron beam welds exhibited crystal structure as the main factor contributing to nucleation behavior. When the crystal structures were the same upon solidification, epitaxial nucleation occurred. Dissimilar crystal structures resulted in a potential orientation relationship with the base metal. The laser welds displayed a relationship between solidification rate and average grain size, where higher solidification rates resulted in a higher nucleation rate and therefore finer weld metal grains. A mechanism of nucleation and growth related to undercooling was proposed. |
