| Abstract Scope |
Ordered α₂ titanium aluminide (Ti₃Al) alloys are attractive for lightweight, high-temperature applications, including aerospace structural components. However, manufacturing Ti₃Al remains challenging because its limited ductility and fracture toughness narrow the processing window for conventional routes such as casting, forging, and welding, as well as rapid-solidification processes such as additive manufacturing, where high thermal gradients can promote residual stresses and cracking. While compositional modifications are often used to improve processability, this work aims to establish a composition-minimizing in situ alloying route for fabricating Ti₃Al by laser powder bed fusion. In this approach, Ti₃Al is produced directly from blended pure Ti and pure Al powders during processing, resulting in parts free of internal cracks and characterized by a dominant α₂ phase. This work demonstrates the potential of L-PBF as an in-situ alloy-design and powder-processing route for lightweight titanium aluminide materials. |
