| Abstract Scope |
Cold spray propels powder feedstock at high velocities, where the particle undergoes severe deformation at strain rates in the range of 105 – 107 s-1, resulting in either bonding or erosion. Under these extreme conditions, powder grains may experience dynamic recrystallization, nanotwinning, amorphization, and fracture, all of which influence bonding behavior. This study demonstrates laser-induced particle impact testing (LIPIT) as a physical simulation technique to generate high strain rates and propel single FCC medium-entropy alloy powder particles onto steel substrates. Post-mortem analyses of impacts at different velocities were performed to investigate deformation mechanisms at the particle–substrate interface and within the particle bulk. The occurrence of interfacial jetting and its role in bonding were also evaluated. The study provides an effective approach for simulating particle impacts and understanding bonding mechanisms in high-strain-rate processes such as cold spray. |
