Abstract Scope |
Electron Beam Melting (EBM) is a Powder Bed Additive Manufacturing process that excels at processing oxidation- and crack-prone materials, notably refractory metals and their alloys. With beam deflection speeds as high as 2000 m/s, EBM printers can melt any sequence of individual points or pixels within the powder bed, traveling between points virtually instantaneously. This flexibility permits the use of advanced space filling algorithms to plan EBM tool paths that produce dense material regardless of the shape or size of the cross section to be melted, with a single set of processing parameters. The current work describes the development of a generalized space filling algorithm and a set of universal processing parameters for pure Tungsten. This greatly simplifies build preparation for jobs that contain both thick and thin features, enabling shorter lead times and more consistent results. |
