| Abstract Scope |
Lightweight Type V composite pressure vessels play an important role in the storage of LH2 in the rapidly developing hydrogen economy. Carbon fiber-reinforced Polyetheretherketone (Carbon/PEEK) is characterized by high specific strength, low permeability, and remarkable thermoplastic toughness. However, it is still sensitive to high-temperature differences at 20 K. The extreme cryogenic conditions create residual thermal stresses, which can, together with mechanical loading, lead to the appearance of microcracks in the polymer and at the interface of the matrix. The aforementioned process results in the progressive damage leading to transverse microcracking and leakage. To solve this problem, we offered a multiscale modeling approach combining MD, which allows studying matrix embrittlement under cryogenic temperatures; micromechanical modeling based on the RVE technique; and CDM which predicts material macroscopic failures under biaxial deformations. This integrated model ensures the understanding of the damage mechanism and helps predict operating limits for existing composite cryogenic tanks. |
