| Abstract Scope |
As laser-powder bed fusion(L-PBF) expands toward commercial Ti products, reducing powder cost while retaining performance is increasingly important. Spherical Ti powder enables stable processing but is expensive, whereas low-cost non-spherical powder suffers from poor flowability. In this study, 0.1 wt.% SiO₂ was introduced as a flowability modifier, and specimens were fabricated using spherical Ti, spherical Ti + SiO₂, and a 6:4 non-spherical/spherical Ti blend + SiO₂. The blended feedstock achieved an ultimate tensile strength of 762.6 ± 3.8 MPa, yield strength of 664.2 ± 4.9 MPa, and elongation of 22.1 ± 0.7%, exceeding the minimum strength requirements of ASTM Grade 4 Ti. EBSD analysis before and after tensile deformation linked the high elongation to locally distributed massive alpha-prime phases and deformation dominated by grain rotation and dislocation slip, while oxygen suppressed conventional deformation twinning. Cryogenic tensile and fatigue tests further assessed the mechanical reliability of SiO₂-assisted low-cost Ti feedstock. |
