Metallic/ceramic multinanolayered (MCM) coatings enhance the performance of structural metals operating in high-temperature, high-pressure, and high-impact environments by improving impact, corrosion, and thermal resistance, while overcoming the limited ductility and strength typical of ceramics. Spatial gradients in structure and composition that yield superior combinations of strength, toughness, and damage tolerance are common in natural materials; however, synthetic nanolayered MCMs have predominantly relied on uniform layer-thickness architectures. In such systems, strength increases with decreasing layer thickness but is ultimately limited by fabrication constraints and softening mechanisms arising from interface-mediated dislocation activity. This talk presents the microstructure and mechanical properties of graded Ti/TiN MCMs, designed to mimic the gradient architectures found in nature, and compares their performance with conventional uniform-thickness MCMs. Results highlight how compositional and structural grading can achieve mechanical properties comparable to those of uniform nano-multilayered coatings with thin layers. |
