| Abstract Scope |
Understanding material transport during multi-material laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is essential for controlling local composition and the resulting microstructure. We combine operando synchrotron X-ray radiography, X-ray computed tomography, and high-fidelity multiphysics simulations to investigate real-time mixing in an Al–Cu multimaterial system. The imaging experiments reveal that copper is incorporated into the melt pool through discrete stochastic events rather than continuous mixing. Material transport is dominated by melt-pool convection, producing heterogeneous local compositions that persist despite high fluid velocities. The simulations reproduce the experimentally observed melt-pool dynamics and provide access to transient composition fields, enabling the underlying transport mechanisms to be identified. The combined approach establishes a direct link between real-time mixing dynamics, composition evolution, and the resulting microstructure, providing experimental validation for numerical models and guidance for the design of multi-material additive manufacturing processes. |
