| Abstract Scope |
This research compares the microstructural evolution during laser directed energy deposition of Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64) thin wall components printed using commercial and recycled powders generated using the hydride-dehydride (HDH) process. Shape irregularities and higher impurity content in the HDH Ti64 powders can impact defect formation and microstructural evolution. This work intends to examine the influence of powder morphology and composition on beta, alpha, and martensite formation using in situ ultrafast X-ray diffraction. Additionally, solid-state phase transformations due to thermal cycling during multilayer printing will also be examined. This data will be combined with mechanical property evaluation to determine the viability of recycled Ti-6Al-4V as alternative feedstock options to commercial feedstocks, and to promote circular economies and resilient supply chains. |
