Corrosion of structural alloys in a wide range of industrial applications is governed by coupled electrochemical conditions and local microstructural and mechanical heterogeneity. These factors are strongly interdependent, and hence decoupling their individual contributions to corrosion kinetics remains a significant challenge in understanding degradation and improving alloy design, durability, and maintenance strategies. In this study, we use the experimental and computational approaches to quantify orientation-dependent corrosion behavior under controlled electrochemical conditions. We adapt scanning electrochemical techniques to resolve localized corrosion kinetics, smaller than 100 μm, within individual aluminum grains. In addition, phase-field simulations examine how crystallographic orientation influences corrosion kinetics across a range of electrochemical environments and benchmark our experiments. Combined experimental and computational results elucidate corrosion dynamics at the single-grain scale and establish a framework for extending this approach to mechanically stressed regions, localized corrosion at grain boundaries, and the localized corrosion around secondary phases and precipitates. |
