| Abstract Scope |
Hindalco has state-of-the art AP36 technology at Aditya and Mahan Aluminium were ramped from 360 kA to 380 kA using a copper-insert collector bar design and operational parameters optimization. A new pot lining design along with a magnetic compensation loop is being piloted in a 10‑pot booster section to attain 400 kA at Mahan smelter. It has successfully achieved 400 kA with sp. energy consumption below 13.1 kWh/kg with optimized process paramters, preheating & startup practices, which provides further pathway for going beyond 400 kA. To further increase amperage by ~15 kA, computational analyses were performed which shows increased anode current density and internal heat (>720 kW) that disrupts thermal balance and raises temperatures of steel shell and busbars. The higher current density also adversely impact the voltage drops of different components. This paper will discuss these challenges and potential ways to address them. |
