| Abstract Scope |
Hard-sphere colloids form close-packed crystalline or liquid phases, solely based on packing fraction. For colloidal particles of micrometer diameter, confocal microscopy makes it possible to observe these phases and their transitions at the particle level and in real time. Two examples will be presented: homogeneous crystal nucleation from the liquid, and the late-stage coarsening of crystals by Ostwald ripening. |
