| Abstract Scope |
Mentoring is a gerund, a “noun” so easily written on paper, yet fundamentally a profoundly important action that we take throughout our lives. For faculty, mentoring is always occurring, whether or not we are aware. This talk will present some observations on the fact that mentoring is dynamic, requiring a constant reassessment as the levels of skills (both hard and soft skills) of the mentee change. In addition, despite the dynamic nature, certain standards must be met, and so the tension between embracing dynamism whilst adhering to standards will be discussed. Finally, the opportunity that exists for effective communication as both mentor and mentee conduct regularly scheduled “maintenance” in their relationship will be presented. |
