| Abstract Scope |
The performance of materials applied in irradiative environments can be degraded by the formation of pressurized nano-scale bubbles. Structural materials exposed to intense alpha-particle irradiation can form He bubbles that lead to strain hardening, embrittlement, and swelling. The pressures within these bubbles, and the associated strain fields in the surrounding matrix, play an important role in material degradation and failure. Recent advances in experimental characterization techniques have enabled the measurements of the local strain fields around He bubbles. Yet, quantitative and consistent measurement of He bubble pressure remain challenging, and even conflict between different studies due to varying irradiation conditions and material systems. Here, we develop a framework to systematically determine the He bubble pressure through combined experimental and modeling efforts using 4D-STEM, physics-based simulations, virtual diffraction simulations, and machine learning. Using this framework, the He bubble pressures in Cu from different irradiated and characterization conditions are determined and validated. |
