The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a major kinetic bottleneck in water electrolysis, particularly under high-current operation, limiting efficient hydrogen production. Developing cost-effective and durable non-noble metal electrocatalysts is therefore essential. Herein, we report an oxygen vacancy-rich, nanoporous Mn3O4/Ni/NiMnO3 architecture synthesized in situ on a NiMn substrate through high-rate straining followed by chemical dealloying. The multiphase catalyst exhibits excellent OER performance, requiring low overpotentials of 262 mV and 282 mV to achieve current densities of 500 and 1000 mA cm-2, respectively. First-principles calculations reveal that the enhanced activity originates from a multi-site lattice oxygen-mediated mechanism involving two parallel oxygen evolution pathways: direct lattice oxygen participation via Ni-O bond cleavage on the NiMnO₃ surface and OH dissociation at the Ni/NiMnO3 interface through activation of under-coordinated Mn-O polyhedra. In addition, oxygen vacancies reconstruct electronic structure, optimizing intermediate adsorption and accelerating reaction kinetics, resulting in exceptional catalytic activity at industrially relevant current densities. |
