Abstract Scope |
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has implemented a project to enhance the monitoring system of hydrogen fluoride (HF) in DX potrooms. Hydrogen fluoride is a toxic gas generated during aluminum electrolysis process. In potrooms, HF emissions are monitored using HF sampling system installed in the roof. Multiple rejections of HF sampling occurred due to pump failures and tripping. The original system does not provide information related to sample run-time and pump failures. To improve the HF monitoring system reliability, several enhancements were introduced to address various failures. The new design consists of immediate notification of pump failure or stoppage, provision of run hours in individual potroom sections, SMS notifications, and a provision for flow meter readings display on SCADA with historical trends. Upon successful completion of this work, HF sampling monitoring failures were significantly reduced and the sampling effectiveness was improved. |
