The distribution and size of inclusions in steels are critical for controlling their material properties. Secondary inclusions, forming by supersaturation caused by temperature decrease and microsegregation during solidification, coarsen through growth and aggregation during the cooling process or heat treatment. In this study, in order to understand the behavior of inclusions in high-alloy steel during the solidification and cooling processes in continuous casting, we performed the high-temperature in-situ observations of the surface of ALLOY-800HT using a confocal laser microscope. When heated to above approximately 500℃, the dendrite structure became apparent, which allowed quantitative evaluation of the location of secondary inclusions. Upon further heating, when the interdendritic regions melted, inclusions appeared and agglomerated at the molten surface. Hence, it was succeeded to identify the positions of dendrite and interdendritic regions and observe the behavior of inclusions at each position through a single in-situ observation procedure. |
