It is known that Ti plays a significant role in grain refinement through nucleation of primary Al3Ti and growth restriction by solute Ti. What is less known is that Al3Ti has two structural modifications with different lattice parameters. The LT phase has a tetragonal structure with a=0.3875 nm, b=3.384 nm while the HT has a tetragonal structure with a=0.3853, b=0.8587 nm [F.J.J Loo, G.D Rieck. Acta Metall. 21 (1973) 61-71]. Phase diagram calculation shows that the LT phase forms in the binary Al-Ti system while the HT phase can be stabilized by small additions of V. In this study we made alloys with the similar volume fraction of these primary phases and compared their grain refining ability. It is demonstrated that the HT phase has a better potency to refine aluminium grains, which is also substantiated by the nucleation temperature variation. This may have implications for grain refining practice. |
