| Abstract Scope |
Large metal structures will be critical components for various spacecrafts. Additive Manufacturing (AM) has been considered as a significant manufacturing technology to fabricate metallic structure. Although different types of AM technologies have been developed to meet people’s customed manufacturing requirements, fabricating large scale metallic structure with AM is still challenging. One important limitation is, the part dimension has to fit the building volume/working range of AM platform. If the part is larger than the AM building volume, the AM process will be impossible. In this work, we introduced a robotic hybrid segmented manufacturing strategy to print metallic structure with larger dimension than the working range of Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing platform. We will report the relative segment-by-segment strategy, reverse engineering, geometrical math, mechanical evaluation of the printed part. The proposed “small machine, large part” hybrid segmented manufacturing can be extended to 3D print very large metal components for space application. |
