| Abstract Scope |
Characterizing nuclear energy related materials involves compositional analysis to measure fuel components and impurities, spatial measurements to identify defects and understand diffusion, and isotopic analyses to confirm enrichment levels. Few techniques can reliably measure all elements of interest down to trace levels and reveal how these elements are distributed spatially. Techniques like Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) are excellent for quantifying trace elements but they require liquid sample introduction which results in bulk chemistry measurements only. Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) provides high-resolution elemental maps but it is unable to detect defects or impurities in trace (i.e., low ppm) levels.
This work presents a new technique, Laser Ablation Laser Ionization Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (LALI-TOF-MS), that can provide trace level detection of the full periodic table, 3D elemental mapping, and isotopic analyses of nuclear energy related materials. |
