Copper is a candidate barrier material for deep geological disposal because of its low general corrosion rate under reducing groundwater conditions, but localized pitting can create deep penetration paths. This study implements a phase-field corrosion model in MOOSE to simulate copper pit growth. A non-conserved order parameter represents the copper/electrolyte interface, phase-dependent diffusivity confines dissolved copper transport to the electrolyte, and an interfacial source term describes anodic dissolution. The formulation is verified using planar dissolution and one-dimensional artificial-pit benchmarks. Planar interface motion is compared with Faraday-law predictions, and artificial-pit growth is evaluated against analytical activation-controlled and ohmic-resistance-controlled limits, reproducing linear and square-root-type depth evolution. The model is then applied to two-dimensional defect-induced pit growth. Effects of applied potential, electrolyte conductivity, copper-ion diffusivity, and kinetic coefficient on pit depth, width, current response, concentration field, and morphology are quantified. The benchmarked framework supports microscale assessment of copper pitting growth. |
