| Abstract Scope |
Bocageopsis multiflora (envira preta) is a native Amazonian lignocellulosic fiber with potential as reinforcement for polymer biocomposites. This study evaluates the effects of alkaline treatment on its morphology and thermal behavior. Fibers were treated in a 5 wt.% sodium hydroxide solution for one hour and oven-dried at 80°C for two hours. Morphological and thermal characterization was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The alkaline treatment promoted partial removal of impurities, hemicellulose, and lignin, increasing surface roughness and exposing cellulose microfibrils, which may improve fiber-matrix adhesion. TGA showed a more defined degradation profile after treatment, indicating structural modifications associated with the reduction of amorphous constituents. DSC revealed changes related to moisture removal and fiber structural rearrangement. These results demonstrate that alkaline treatment improves the morphological and thermal characteristics of envira preta fibers, supporting their application as sustainable reinforcement for polymer biocomposites. |
