Abstract Scope |
Formwork plays a crucial role in concrete construction, and the growing architectural demand for highly customized formworks, poses significant challenges due to the high costs and labor intensity associated with traditional fabrication methods. In this study, we address this challenge by developing a two-component thermoset polymer extrusion system for integration with robotic arms and intended for Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM) applications. The system is engineered for materials reinforced with chopped carbon fibers, enhancing mechanical properties and improving print stability. In conjunction with numerical optimization techniques, the system is used to fabricate formwork for concrete casting, where stiffening ribs are strategically placed and oriented to maximize stiffness while minimizing material usage. The system’s capabilities are demonstrated through the printing of advanced and complex concrete formwork, infeasible to produce using conventional methods. The results highlight the potential of BAAM technologies to translate advanced designs into practical, real-world constructions. |
