| Abstract Scope |
Advanced nuclear reactors require materials capable of maintaining structural integrity under high temperatures and intense radiation environments. Pyrolytic carbon (PyC), used in tristructural isotropic (TRISO) fuel systems as a diffusion barrier, may develop irradiation-induced pathways that facilitate fission product transport. This study investigates glassy polymeric carbon (GPC) as a potential alternative barrier material due to its isotropic microstructure, low permeability, and thermal stability. GPC specimens fabricated at various carbonization temperatures are characterized using Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and nanoindentation before and after heavy ion irradiation. The effects of irradiation on defect evolution, bonding structure, and mechanical properties are evaluated to establish relationships between processing conditions, radiation response, and structural stability. Results provide insight into the suitability of polymer-derived carbon materials for advanced nuclear fuel applications and contribute to the development of improved diffusion barrier materials for next-generation TRISO fuel systems. |
