| Abstract Scope |
Several spider silks have been demonstrated to consist entirely of uniform, long nanofibrils featuring diameters of 10–20 nm. In a typical spider silk fiber, these nanofibrils are closely packed and oriented strictly parallel to the fiber. Our group has developed techniques to fully decompose spider silk fibers into their nanofibrillar components for the first time. This has allowed us to study the nanofibrils and learn more about their internal structure. Furthermore, we have been able to reassemble these nanofibrils to make a new type of bulk material. Studying the mechanical properties of this material we gained insights into the fundamental properties of materials made from nanofibrils, which can be used to make materials with optimized properties. |
